Corrections and right of reply
We publish critical findings about organizations that handle donated money. That obligates us to take accuracy seriously enough to correct ourselves, visibly, when we are wrong.
What can be corrected
Any factual value in a file: a figure, a date, a name, a relationship, a characterization of a document. If a fact is wrong we fix it, note the change in the file's revision log, and reassess any finding that depended on it.
What cannot be negotiated
Conclusions. An organization can show us that a fact is wrong or that we missed a document. It cannot ask us to soften an assessment the facts support. If new evidence changes the picture, the assessment changes because the evidence did.
How submissions are handled
- Every submission is acknowledged, and every submitter hears back in writing.
- Factual corrections supported by a document are reviewed first. A correction that changes a finding is reviewed by a second researcher before it is published.
- If we change a published fact, the file's version number increments and the change is logged on the file with the date.
- If we decline a correction, we say why in writing.
- Organizations may submit a written response to any published file. We publish it, unedited, in the file's sources section.
Who can submit
Anyone. Organizations under review, their advisors, donors, journalists, researchers and readers. We ask for an affiliation so we can weigh the submission appropriately, and we do not publish submitter identities without permission.
